Spinouts

Companies created by Ploughshare

Ploughshare uniquely offers to its investors and entrepreneurs the opportunity to join government backed, high-technology, spin-out companies.

We take the very best innovations developed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and find new applications in the commercial world. Ploughshare is the only organisation to have access to invention disclosures from across the MOD.

These innovations, developed to meet operational defence and security requirements, benefit from having received government backing, are de-risked, and have robust intellectual property positions.

Showcased below are some examples of our successful spinouts.

Overview

Founded as a spin out company in 2019, the technology was originally developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), designed to identify and predict those who are at particular risk of developing sepsis, using a set of biomarkers. Presymptom’s technology has the potential to be directly relevant for Covid-19 patients, which will provide vital and life saving information. The scientists involved in development of the technology were awarded the The Sun’s 2018 “Millie” Innovation Award.

Overview

P2i Ltd was the first spin-out of the DSTL in 2005. P2i’s technology is a novel plasma-surface (waterproof) coating process which initially had applications in clothing and footwear, and then later in electronics, lifestyle, bio-consumables and military. The technology offered customers improvements in performance of their products by protecting them from the effects of liquids without affecting the overall look or feel. The technology has been in production on electronic devices since 2008. Ploughshare remained involved in P2i’s growth until exiting the partnership in 2015.
