What is it like to work at Ploughshare?

We pride ourselves on our company values, prioritising an inclusive, flexible, supportive company culture. Learn more below:

Where are our team based?

We are a mostly remote based company, with team members working from home across the UK. We are set up to be a remote business, with regular video calls and collaborative working to stay connected. However, we do have an office in Porton Science Park in Porton Down, as well as access to dynamic working spaces in London and Manchester that can be used for in-person meetings or co-working when arranged.

How often do the team get together in-person?

The whole team gets together once per quarter for our business review meetings, where we discuss and share business progress, catch up with each other, learn from guest speakers, and get creative with team building innovation games. For those staying the night, you have the option of joining the team for dinner which can be a lovely opportunity to get to know your colleagues better. We also have an annual Christmas party, and in 2025 we celebrated Ploughshare’s 20th birthday with a special summer party.

As an organisation, there may be regular in-person meetings, events and training days throughout the year. These provide opportunities to collaborate, connect with colleagues, and learn together.

What is our work culture like?

We aim to have a supportive, flexible, inclusive culture at Ploughshare, where all team members feel they can be their authentic selves at work. Many of our team members build the school run or other outside commitments into their calendars, and some of our team work part-time to balance their work hours with childcare or other responsibilities.

We provide a range of benefits to prioritise wellbeing – including a private healthcare option which includes counselling, a core team of mental health first aiders and a confidential helpline for mental wellbeing, the choice to purchase an additional five days of annual leave per year for anyone who wants or needs it, and more. We also have two hours of no internal meetings blocked out over the typical lunch hours each day to ensure everyone can get away from their desks for a proper break.

Ploughshare has undergone huge transformations in recent years as an organisation, and we are still continuing to move the dial. Innovation is very important to us, and we encourage our team to share their ideas of how we can keep improving to reach greater heights of success. Our colleagues are a friendly bunch, and are here to help you ease in when you join us.

How is staff feedback implemented?

We have an annual staff survey where feedback is anonymised externally and shared back with us, as well as smaller touch points throughout the year. The results are then reviewed by HR and our internal people’s voice forum (our ‘VOX’ team – made up of team members from across the business who are dedicated to driving positive change at Ploughshare), to put forward solutions and make meaningful changes in the business to address challenges or concerns raised and uphold areas received positively. We take feedback seriously and want our team to feel heard, doing what we can to make Ploughshare a better place to work every year.

Is experience in the defence sector required to join Ploughshare?

Experience specific to the defence sector is not required; our team have a broad range of backgrounds with a wide range of expertise. We are looking for people passionate about being part of exciting change in the world, who want to help our mission to solve global problems with innovative solutions.

We are committed to an inclusive workplace

Creating a workplace where everyone feels respected, valued,
and able to thrive is essential. We believe that diversity of thought and experience drives innovation, so we actively work to build teams that reflect a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.

We also run initiatives that promote equality, encourage open conversations, and provide spaces for employees to share ideas and feedback. Inclusion is not a one-time effort, so we are always learning, improving, and continuing our work in this area.

Our recruitment process

Once we receive your application, our panel carefully reviews and shortlists candidates against the job description to ensure the best fit for the role.

We have a competitive recruitment process, and we also maintain a talent pool for future opportunities. Throughout the steps, our HR team will keep you informed and provide clear updates so you know what
to expect. If you are shortlisted, we will arrange an interview and guide you through the next steps. Our aim is to make the experience transparent, fair, and supportive from start to finish.
