As the use of artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly expands across new industries, there is a growing need to explain how AI processes information to accommodate higher safety needs and empower users to make better decisions. Amulet, a new AI tool, has been developed to meet this requirement, enabling the benefits of AI to be realised in situations not possible before.
Current AI language models and existing commercial platforms do not provide the level of transparency and auditability required to be safely deployed in high-risk and high consequence scenarios where human experts are making data-based decisions – significantly limiting their use. These AI models often lack accuracy, transparency, and explainability, and are prone to ‘hallucinations’, which can be difficult to unpick with limited visibility into how the AI’s answers and solutions have been found, processed, and decided. There are also often issues with data ownership, security and interoperability.
It was essential for a new AI tool to be designed that could be used for police investigations or safety critical operations found in industries like construction and oil and gas. This required a new approach to AI design – one which embedded human expertise, needs, and experience at its core.
Developed by Dstl in collaboration with defence and security end users, Amulet – a new and highly advanced software tool – unlocks adequate oversight of AI tools and empowers experts to make faster and better decisions.
Amulet is based on both a user and human-centered approach, meaning it has been designed to explore lines of enquiry and data exploration as a human analyst would, supporting the investigative process. It embeds human expertise at its core and combines AI, cognitive intent modelling, and modular function execution to ensure accurate answers.
The system optimises processes beyond what a human user would be able to achieve by coordinating complex interactions across multiple tools and datasets. Users can control the data sources it calls upon, mitigating against the risk of ‘hallucinations’, whilst also allowing an end user to easily unpick the way the system has worked.
Provide real-time support to avoid and reduce pauses in operation in all drilling operation environments. This technology can also be used for early warning and resolution support, and enhance site and protocol training.
Amulet can be utilised to ensure health and safety compliance, as well as linking with other data sets and site maps to provide powerful real time operational insights. It can also be used for training and support, as well as identifying the correct equipment for a specific task.
In fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and high value manufacturing with complicated supply chains, Amulet can speed up the process of a recall to reduce overall time and cost, and minimise health and safety risks. It can also help to identify which possible suppliers may have been at the root of a batch failure.
Amulet can support public safety and saving lives by enhancing police analytical abilities and making informed decisions more efficient. Uses can range from live investigations to retrieve and process information on critical incidences, such as kidnappings or human trafficking, to supporting logistical analysis and planning for military exercises. In these cases, situational awareness informs critical decision making, such as defining the right course of action to successfully intercept an offender or rescue a victim.
